As we approach the end of all the summer fun of beach visits, amusement parks, festivals, and pool side evenings you may begin to notice the sun has taken quite the toll on your hair. You'll notice your will be in constant knots and it may end up getting as bad as dreads forming at the back of your head. Take a deep breath and don't worry - we have your back. As to many other beauty dilemmas such as wrinkles, brittle weak nails, etc - There is a common key offender to all these common problems and it's the lack of moisture. Your hair is dry! There are a lot of sources of the problem to be blamed but as for the summer season there are two main evils.
- Sun exposure: Imagine going to the beach all day without any sunscreen on, what happens? Basically you won't be able to move right for a couple of days and aloe will be your new best friend because your skin is burned. Did you ever considered using something to protect you hair too? Hair gets sun burned also and although you can't feel it the way you do on your skin, it's there. The cuticle becomes damaged in the sun causing splitting, dry, brittle hair.
- Swimming (Sea water/Chlorine pools): Sea water is osmotic. In simple terms, what this means is that it loves water. In fact it loves water so much that it is stealing it straight from your hair leaving your strands dry and parched.
Now that you sort of have an understanding as to what is happening on top of your head it's all about curing the problem and preventing for future summers to come
- Call a professional: Your salon's phone number is your hairs '9-1-1' so book an appointment for a trim and treatment. This will help remove those dead, damaged ends that are un-revivable and bring moisture back into your thirsty strands.
- At-home remedies: Everyone is trying to save a few bucks here and there - for some this means keeping salon visits to a minimum and that's okay. Pintrest is your friend in this situation! - Our favorite trick: add some of your favorite styling oil (our two favorites are Awapuhi styling treatment oil by paul mitchell and Elixer by goldwell) into some of your conditioner, mix together and leave on for 5-10 mins. If you already have it around the house why not utilize it. Don't use a styling oil? Try a bit of olive oil.
- Protect: Next summer don't let your hair fall victim. Look for products with uv protection, use a clarifying shampoo after pool and beach days followed by a deep conditioner, and keep your eyes out for a blog post at the beginning of summer 2015 dedicated to summer hair care.
